Gambling slang

What does degen mean in gambling?

Degen is slang shortened from degenerate. In gambling conversations, it usually describes someone seen as taking excessive or imprudent risks. A person may use it as a self-directed joke; directed at someone else, it can be insulting.

Context changes the force of the word

The same label can acknowledge a foolish wager, joke about a habit or criticize someone else's behavior. It is informal language. You cannot infer the speaker's actual spending, financial situation or gambling history from that word alone.

It also appears as a description of an action, sometimes as a verb for gambling recklessly. Those uses carry the same rough idea of imprudent risk. They do not turn degen into a technical category with a defined stake threshold.

A label leaves out the useful detail

Loose descriptionMore specific description
A degen bet.A wager larger than the limit chosen before play.
Degen mode.Another deposit made to try to recover the earlier loss.
A degen player. An account of the actual behavior, without assuming the person's motives or circumstances.

These are illustrative wording examples, not quotations from players or a community.

It is not a badge of ability

Calling someone a degen does not establish that they are experienced, successful or part of an expert group. Calling yourself one does not explain whether a wager was affordable. A large stake alone also lacks the context needed to judge someone's situation.

For a review or a support conversation, describe what happened: the stake changed, a stopping point moved or money was redeposited. That gives the reader something concrete. The slang label can be left out.
